Whillas & Gunn Spring/Summer 2012 collection

July 14, 2011

Australian Menswear brand Whillas & Gunn are back with their latest Spring/Summer 2012 collection lookbook and it’s one that sees the brand continuing with their strong workwear influence, but taking a slight sideways step at the same time with both more tailored pieces, and a touch of streetwear creeping into the proceedings.

The workwear influence in part comes from the brand being sibling to makers of all things outdoors and Australian, Kakadu – a brand that has been equipping the folk of the outback since 1972. It’s these same foundations of rugged, well made clothing that have also been used in Whillas & Gunn’s collection and no doubt contribute to the brands look.

Shot in a mix of both urban and rural settings on location in Japan, the images help give the collection it’s distinct feel between the two environments – as if to show the clothes’ ability to work within either setting (or maybe just wearing it’s influence clearly on its sleeve). Now I’ll admit that some of this is a bit much (and I’m not one for looking like I’m going trekking through the jungle when I’m actually off to Waitrose), but some of the individual pieces are spot on.

The label has always done shirts well and this collection is no different, particularly with some really nice long and short sleeve button downs and the twin pocket in what looks like Chambray. It’s the same with the outerwear – there’s some great lightweight cotton pieces, with the blue trench particularly catching my eye (the short khaki’s nice too with its big lapels and slanted chest pocket).

Legwear also gets its share of pastel colours and also comes in a few different styles and cuts, as do the shorts in the range. The pair in the last few images look almost cargo but quite tapered too, I’d like to see more of these. Finally, the other pieces I like is that canvas and leather bags, which look to have moved on from the large carry all’s of last season. There seem to be a few variations, all following the same look and construction, I’m certainly interested in seeing more of these in the future.

On the whole I like it! Hoping guns are going to big next summer.

Rob – do you think we are seeing an increasing 1940’s influence in the upcoming look books? HR and percival in particular.

To an extent I think we are mate, although I often wonder how much of that is garment design as opposed to just styling, plus I’m not sure how 1940’s it is as opposed to ‘wartime/military’ clothing.

Actually the location is Hong Kong. Not Japan.
