Up There store Melbourne

November 4, 2010

Here’s the second installment of my Australian shop tour. Up There is very recently opened (it opened on the 4th October), Melbourne based Menswear store set up by Brendan Mitchell and James Barrett.

The main focus of the store is on stocking labels that are hard to come by in Australia, with the guys selling the likes of 3Sixteen, Amongst Friends, Bleu De Paname, Clarks, Monitaly, New Balance, Norse Projects, Ontour, Staple Design, Tanner Goods and Yuketen to name but a few.

Situated on McKillop Street, above the Haunted Bookshop, the first thing you notice when you walk up the stairs to the first floor is how well set out the store is – simple white walls with scaffold pole rails, exposed wooden floors and a central table space all make for a very subtle affair with nothing superfluous to get in the way of the clothing on show. It’s well laid out and the product the guys are getting in is great.

Whilst I was there Brendan talked me through the stock (and recommended a great restaurant for us to go for lunch, cheers for that), most of which is unique to the store. It’s the first store in Australia to stock Norse Projects and the guys have got a stash of the awesome Oi Polloi parka in both khaki and navy that I talked about here (so if you missed one in your size from Manchesters finest you may be interested to know that Up There have a full size run in both colours), plus they’ve also got some of their new season shirts, long sleeve T-shirts, hats and the Ally Capellino collaboration bags.

They’re also the only store selling Yuketen (I bought a pair of the orange deck chukkas whilst I was there which I’ll be posting up soon), Clarks, 3Sixteen, Staple and they’re soon to be stocking Monitaly and Blue de Paname too – pretty much everything they’re getting in will be unique to them in Australia and it’s certainly something that’s marking the guys out over there.

I can’t compliment the store and the service enough too, the guys are great and more than happy to just talk clothes with you, not interested in the hard sell and clearly clued up with what’s going on globally. The store would be a great credit to any city and by the look of things is going to prove to be very popular in Melbourne as it gains more recognition.

To find out more about the guys or to order online, have a look at their website here: Up There.
