Nigel Cabourn Atkinson surgeons jacket

October 11, 2012

I took delivery of this a couple of weeks ago but it had to go the tailors to get the sleeves taken up slightly so I only got it back last week. It’s the surgeons jacket from Cabourn’s latest limited edition – Scott’s last expedition (find the post on it here) and it’s a real beauty. The guys let me order it personally from them, which considering no UK shops ordered this in my size was a good thing.

There was a choice of two colours and I opted for the charcoal and blue tweed, feeling it was a bit more contemporary than the brown/red version. The Harris tweed that’s been used to construct it has been especially woven for this range and is a beautiful cloth, thick and as hard-wearing as you’d hope it to be. It’s half lined with all seams piped, making it feel quite lightweight (more so than my Mallory) but no less warm or comfortable.

Features include four front pockets – two large lined lower pockets with flap closure and a pair of chest pockets that fasten via an exposed button. The jacket fastens up quite high with small lapels so you feel protected from the off, but if you need a bit of extra warmth the lapels can be worn up and there’s a button by the collar to fasten it all in place.

The working cuffs are a nice touch that hint at the care that’s gone into this piece – the whole thing is impeccably made inside and out. Whilst it’s still a bit warm to be wearing it at the moment, I’ve got no doubt that it’ll be getting a lot of use over the coming months.

Yeah I was really chuffed they let me order it off them direct. And like I said nowhere in the UK ordered it in my size (in fact only one place in the whole of Europe did).
