Sawa footwear

July 27, 2012

As a man with a history of having rather a lot of casual footwear, new trainer brands are always of interest. And that’s especially true when the label happens to come from somewhere you weren’t expecting, which is the case with Sawa, a label I was introduced to at Jacket Required (but couldn’t photograph thanks to my camera dying).

This footwear company manufactures their shoes exclusively in Africa, and only with materials sourced within the continent (from Tunisia all the way down to South Africa). They produce two main styles, first is the ‘Doctor Bess’, a low cut canvas/leather shoe featuring a reinforced stitching on the upper, a 100% cotton textile lining, yellowed low-profile sole (with map of Africa on the base) and the brand logo flocked on the tongue.

My undoubted preference though is for their high top Tsagué – it carries the same features as the Doctor Bess but for me just looks better proportioned with the higher ankle collar and simpler toe box. It also reminds me a bit of OG adidas Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s (one of my all time favourite trainers) and is especially good in suede – the simple colours perfectly highlighting the clean retro lines it’s blessed with.

UK stockists consist of Dover Street Market, Liberty and Folk in London, with Birmingham’s Autograph being the only stockist outside the capital. For more information on the brand, or to find other international stockists, go to the website here: Sawa.
