Smith-Wykes Autumn/Winter 2012 collection

March 5, 2012

Based between London and Paris and established in 2010, Smith-Wykes is a new Menswear label formed by Rory Wykes and Michaell Smith that’s set to launch its inaugural collection for the next Autumn/Winter season. The label stand by the belief that Men’s clothing should work to compliment, rather than overshadow the individual and their range of well made garments looks set to do just that.

UK designer Rory Wykes comes fresh from a previous role at Lacoste and also draws on a wealth of experience from designing for labels such as cult UK brand Baracuta. By way of New York, Michaell Smith is the Paris based element, having lived there for over 10 years. He brings a strong business and legal background to the label and it’s Michaell’s sharp sartorial eye, plus a passion for emerging music and artists that have led him into the menswear business.

The collection itself is full of well thought out and detailed staple items, and contains the kinds of pieces you’d expect in a range that encompasses both formal pieces and more casual wear. Smart shirts, sharp knitwear (in organic wool and alpaca) and tailored wide-lapel two-button blazers sit alongside basic (well not that basic when you get it in hand) jersey-wear like sweat pants and hoodies and there’s a couple of more workwear inspired pieces in the mix too.

There’s also denim, tailored trousers and some really lovely outerwear, from the removable fur collared Pea Coat to a more technical looking (and multi-pocketed) M65 style parka, through to that lovely orange corduroy over shirt. Colour is something that’s used well through the wider collection with a core palette of foggy greys and deep blues, highlighted by ginger browns and mustards.

So another new label to look out for, and one with a lot to get your teeth into when it finally hits the shelves towards the end of the year. No doubt they’re going to be getting a lot of attention in the coming months so for more information on the brand, go to their website here: Smith-Wykes.

Not sure whether it’s the model or bad sizing but the cut of these garments looks a little ‘flat’ for my liking.

I think it might just be the styling that’s putting you off. From seeing everything up close it’s lovely stuff and looks to be well fitting, I think once their pieces are mixed in with existing bits in your wardrobe it’ll be bob on.

i tend to agree with rob on this one. i like some of the upper pieces and colour combinations but unsure about the fit and materials on the lower garments. nice spot though

Smith-Wykes modern take on the essentials is a refreshing and exciting entry into the fashion sphere currently inhabited by Simon Spurr, Shipley and Halmos and Michael Bastian with a bit of the refinement of new Paul Smith wear thrown in to send it over the top of the heap. I actually got a chance to see the line in Paris and wears even better than it looks. Can’ wait to see this line in the coming seasons.
