Oliver Spencer Autumn/Winter 2012 LFW show

February 23, 2012

Yesterday saw the turn of Menswear labels to show off their next season’s wares and once again I was invited to Oliver Spencer’s show. This time the label had moved to the larger capacity courtyard space at Somerset House, and the location proved to be the perfect backdrop with which to view this forthcoming collection.

Next season is said to be inspired by a feeling of 1970’s art-house and the iconic persona of a young Lucian Freud. With a range that was full of colour and texture, Autumn/Winter’s collection marks yet another bold step forward for the designer and on display here was garment after garment of eminently wearable Men’s clothing.

Spencer’s trademark tailoring was ever present in the English-made suits which were unlined with taped seams and cut in wool/herringbone blends. Outerwear was as strong as ever with beautiful woolen short jackets (one which featured a wicked curved placket), Fair Isle biker jacket, double breasted ‘lighthouse’ coat and that fantastic Fair Isle sleeved bomber.

Knitwear came in Fisherman’s style roll-neck and speckled wool crew neck jumpers, there were well cut trousers aplenty, patch pocket waistcoats and yet another great range of shirts. As said, colour and pattern was a strong feature within the range with lots of olive, red and ochre featuring, plus large checks, fine stripes, polka dots and tightly knitted Fair Isle.

You’ll already have seen some of the footwear in my Jacket Required round-up and in addition to the beautiful suede Brogue boots (of which the red ones are stunning), were a range of casual chukka boots, double monks and capped-toe Oxfords. All of the formal shoes are bench made in Northampton and in fact much of the collection is made in the UK, with many items produced in London.

A lot of the shoes/boots look like trickers, are they?

Don’t know to be honest. They’re made by one of the Northampton factories, so even though they’re Oliver Spencer branded they could easily be made by Trickers.

I’ll ask them and let you know.
