Tender Spring/Summer 2011 denim

January 4, 2011

After seeing Tender’s Spring/Summer range back in August (find the write up here) I was so taken by the new Weld dyed jeans that I immediately ordered a pair.

Basically, whereas the first Tender jeans were over-dyed with indigo, these are over-dyed with Weld, a natural yellow dye from the Weld plant, which covers the indigo in a light yellow sheen and significantly darkens them, making them look almost black. At the same time this gets into the stitching, the reverse of the denim and the Callico lining used for the pockets, turning them a light yellow and really bringing out all of the detailing in the jeans (which unfortunately, my camera has done a crap job of capturing).

Well the week before Christmas, after a four month wait for them to be made and hand dyed, William popped round to the agency and delivered my jeans.

I’m chuffed to bits with them and they were more than worth the wait. How they’re going to fade as they’re worn is going to be interesting as you’d think the indigo washing through the Weld should turn the wear patches green, or will the weld seal them, washing out quicker but protecting the indigo? It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes them to just turn blue, The proof’s going to be in the wearing and I intend to wear them an awful lot – I reckon the fades are going to be great.

They’re baggier than most of my other jeans but it’s nice to wear something a bit looser fitting for a change, especially with them being made from a fairly heavy denim (which helps make them warm and great for Winter). They were too long in the leg when I got them, so I’ve had some length taken off and am wearing them with a small turn-up too showing off the blue selvedge, so now they’re perfect.

They’re also still very raw and very, very dark, but they’ve started to break-in nicely over the fortnight I’ve been wearing them (almost non-stop). William was wearing a pair that he’d washed a couple of times when we met and the blue had started to come through on those after about four months and a couple of washes. They looked really good and although I’ll do my usual and hold off washing mine properly for a year or so, I reckon they’ll look ace when the blue starts showing through and they soften up even more.

If you fancy a pair of these yourself they’re available at the moment from Okiya with more stockists to follow soon. For more information on the brand have a look at the website here: Tender.
