What I want – Bedouin Mamluke overnight bag

September 22, 2010

Well there haven’t been many bags on the blogs recently as I’ve been preoccupied with winter jackets. So here’s some more bag love, this time in the form of an understated overnight bag by UK brand Bedouin. Handmade in England from heavy weight waxed cotton canvas and high quality vegetable tanned leather – it’s a simple yet great looking piece of luggage.

All of Bedouin’s bags come with a lifetime warranty on workmanship for normal wear and tear (indeed the company’s mantra is one of “buy quality, and buy it once!“) so straight away you know you’re purchasing something that’s been produced with an extremely high level of care and attention.

In addition to the premium materials used for the outer and handles, nothing is scrimped on in terms of fittings either – you get a pair polished riri zips, both with leather pulls and the inside of the bag is lined in a black and white, hand printed cotton.

And as to the name ‘Bedouin’, well that’s explained simply as thus:

“We based the design of the bags on the metaphor of the Bedouin tent. A nomadic shelter, rugged and weatherproof on the outside, whereas inside they offer luxury, shelter and comfort. Our bags follow the same metaphor, rugged and durable on the outside, dust proof and water resistant. Inside, printed linings and padded compartments provide secure storage for your personal possessions.”

So what you have is a simple yet sophisticated bag and one that should literally last you a lifetime. It’s certainly a great looking piece of kit and it’s also good to see people offering guarantees like this on their products – there’s no better way of giving people faith that they’re buying something of premium quality. It’s available in two colourways, so if you aren’t so keen on the natural version you’ll be happy to hear that it’s also available in black.

UK stockists are limited but if you’re London based and you’d like to see the bags in person they’re available from : Goodhood, Condor Cycles, Dover Street Market, Hostem, b Store and Tokyo Fixed. For more information on the brand and to see the whole range visit their website here: Bedouin.
