S.E.H Kelly – Preface
A couple of months ago I did an article about a new Menswear company starting up called S.E.H Kelly (which you can find here). Well after a bit of a wait they’ve launched a small capsule collection for Spring/Summer 2010 entitled ‘Preface’. When I say ‘small’ I mean that it’s very simply two shirts, two pairs of trousers and an overshirt.
It’s just a taste of things to come though and here it is:
It’s a good taste though – the shirts both look great, being made from a mix of cotton and wool, with real horn buttons and semi cut-away collars. The length of them also seems perfect for wearing un-tucked (which is good if like me, that’s how you like to wear your shirts).
The overshirt is made from an unlined corduroy with natural Corozo buttons and a club collar, showing the company’s work wear aesthetic. And finally the trousers follow on from the shirts in also being simple but well tailored, again using horn buttons but this time combined with a lightly brushed cotton drill, in colours that compliment the shirts perfectly.
It’s this complimentary aspect of all of the pieces that gives the collection a versatility that belies it’s diminutive size. If you just bought all of this you’d have a selection of clothes that would have you looking dapper for a long time to come. Obviously I’d recommend buying key bits and making them work with what you’ve already got, something I think they’ll do with ease.
The collection is available now and can be purchased online here: S.E.H Kelly.

love the look.
what shoes are those?
thanks
Brian
Erm, I don’t know who the shoes are by but I shall find out!
I like this. These looks are classic and there is a certain heft to the fabrics that present a certain ruggedness. These clothes look lived in which I’m all for. Also, the idea of the “capsule” collection really appeals to me. I’d like to see designers pair down their collection. If I start a brand (which I might), I could see myself releasing a season’s collection consisting of only 2-3 shirts, 1-2 trousers, 1 Jacket, and an accessory. Try maximizing the looks like you see in this post. It’s not revolutionary but I think it would polarize an idea or concept about a season’s collection. Any thought’s?
I totally agree.
I’m very much a fan of less is more and on a personal level wear the same stuff often, because it works. I kind of create my own ‘capsule collection’ every season, which is exactly as you describe it – simply consisting of a few items that work well together, then as I add new bits it’s done in a considered way and often they replace very similar items that I’ve worn out. I guess it’s like I have a uniform in many ways but it’s how I’m comfortable and it’s always fairly considered. I’m half way through doing an article on ‘wardrobe staples’ (just need to take pictures) and hopefully it’ll show a lot of what I’m talking about.
It would be nice if larger companies would embrace this though. I’d rather see much smaller collections with more attention paid to single items and how everything works together as opposed to 20-30 different garments, many of which jar. Lots of small companies start off this way but I imagine it must be easy to lose sight of this as you grow and want to offer people more.
Like you if I was to start something myself this is the route I’d take, small and considered. Sometimes choice can be a bad thing…
Just to add to the question above, the guys at S.E.H Kelly got in touch to inform me that the shoes shown are Trickers.
Damn nice they are too.
I thought they were Trickers. A good friend of mine lives in them. Loving that tan jacket. That’s very me.
The shirting is particularly strong and so reasonably priced. I might just have to get both of them!
